A "Kappa" is a small, mysterious creature that lives in the sea. No one has ever "captured" a Kappa but there are many legends about them! They seem to have a bit of a mischievous nature - they will grab swimmers by the foot, and pull them under the water! But, they are cute and since no one has ever seen a Kappa - we enjoy the idea of being careful when swimming. Naoko wrote "Kappa Ex" - and the song is very fun, but it is as mysterious as the creature itself! She sings of drinking an "extract of Kappa" ("Kappa-Ex") - a green liquid - and then a plate comes on top of her head, and webs come between her fingers! But, she is "full of pep" from the experience!
. It is all in fun & kids like the idea of the little sea creature, because they are full of "pep", too!
"Kappa" is seen everywhere in Japan... and is a favorite with artists. Here is a carving of a "Kappa", that shows it clinging to a rock with a frog:
Sometimes, the smart little Kappa will catch a free ride! Here is one using a catfish for transportation!:
Oh, Kappa is doing battle with a big octopus!!
The Kappa has caught a large dog! But, the dog doesn't seem to mind!
