As we were planning the mission of the Knife Collectors N. America Fan Club for Shonen Knife in December of 1999, everything changed suddenly with the announcement of Michie Nakatani's retirement from the band. This made certain changes necessary and some delays inevitable. With the release of subsequent albums by Shonen Knife ("Strawberry Sound", "Heavy Songs" and "Candy Rock") it was reassuring to see that Naoko & Atsuko Yamano were forging ahead on their journey through new musical landscapes. The addition of a skilled new drummer, Mana Nishiura, and transfer of Atsuko from the drums to the front stage as the new Bassist, has worked very well for the band - and today's Shonen Knife have bold, powerful drive... but retain that whimsical approach to life in their songs, that made them the premier band in the world, from Japan. Shonen Knife have created a wonderful history & musical legacy uniquely their own. The real mission of Knife Collectors is to provide information and perspective on Shonen Knife and their continuing adventure in the new millennium, for fans who truly love their music.
We have learned that the National Association of Fan Clubs, of which Knife Collectors was a member, has closed down their operation. For many years, they provided information and news about Fan Clubs across N. America, and were devoted to that cause. We are sorry to see them go... their newsletters featured helpful information on Fan Club procedure and lots of input from Fan Club planners. Fan Clubs for a really diverse spectrum of Personalities were listed there: ABBA, Shirley Jones, James Dean Remembered, Englebert Humperdinck, Yngwie Malmsteen, The Monkees, The Ventures, Kevin Costner, Roger Waters, Tom Jones, Robert Redford, Tommy Sands, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Star Wars, among many others - well, a lot of talent was honored under the tent of the NAFC. It filled a unique place in the enjoyment of the fun things of life.
