Shonen Knife have debuted a new Support Bassist this year, in Japan. Their first show of this year was in Osaka, and the new Bass Player performed with them there. Her name is "Hatsue". It is pronounced "Ha-tsu-A", in english. Some years ago, Hatsue was the vocalist for the band "Pink Pander" which included Shonen Knife Drummer, Etsuko. Etsuko is very pleased to have Hatsue performing now with Shonen Knife. More news on this development in time. Meanwhile, they are busy with new shows scheduled in the month of March, in Japan.

Shonen Knife returned to North America in November, and launched a tour of the U.S. and Canada. The band was in top form, and included original Shonen Knife founding member, Atsuko on Bass Guitar, sister and founding member Naoko on Lead Guitar, and new fulltime drummer, Etsuko! Atsuko is now residing in the U.S. and was up front again with Naoko as they performed many of their signature songs, and songs from their latest Japanese-release album, "Fun, Fun, Fun!". The first (4) albums by Shonen Knife, were re-released in the U.S. February 2005: This is GREAT news for fans of the band, who have not been able to get copies of these very early recordings! The albums are, "Burning Farm", "Yama-No Attchan", "Pretty Little Baka Guy" and "712". The CD's are released by Oglio Records (based in Los Angeles, CA). There are some great artists being released by this label, so this is very encouraging news. The Shonen Knife albums are released in newly remastered digital format from the master tapes, so they will sound great on modern audio equipment! The albums feature an additional inclusion of two *bonus* tracks from *live* performances, on each release. First information is this: "Burning Farm": Watchin' Girl & I Wanna Be Sedated. "Yama No Attchan": Flying Jelly Attack & Insect Collector. "Pretty Little Baka Guy": Riding on the Rocket & Kappa EX. "712": Lazybone & Blue Oyster Cult. Serious Collectors and new fans who couldn't find these early releases, take note!! These are a must have... few bands today have a 20+ year legacy of magic and continuing creative genius... as do Shonen Knife. We are fortunate to have these recordings available again... so pick them up and go "Riding On The Rocket" from past to present, with the band referred to in the 80s as "the only band that matters."
Shonen Knife had one of their recordings featured in a U.S. Television series! The song "Herbs", written by Naoko Yamano, was used in a TV program called "Good Girls Don't". The show is a feature of the "Oxygen Network" on Cable TV, and the air date for this episode was scheduled for 9PM, on Friday, July 16, 2004! Check your local Cable TV schedules for time and program information if this show is rebroadcast in the 2005 season. Here is the link!:

Shonen Knife recently completed an email interview with a Russian pop music magazine in Belorussia. It is a fun and interesting interview, and when it is published - we'll have some information about the magazine and the comments by Naoko in this interview. The publisher of the magazine contacted the Shonen Knife NeXuS, and we put him in touch with Shonen Knife... and the interview was quickly completed. We know that Shonen Knife's music is played on the air in Northern Europe, so it is great to know that the band, and their music, is known and appreciated in countries where they have yet to tour! We look forward to the presentation of this interview by our friends in Russia!
For now, we'll pass on one tiny part of the interview, and that is Naoko's recipe for "Coconut Banana" treat! She says it is "Thai Food", and she finds it a great summertime treat. I tried it (using honey in place of sugar) and by putting the bananas, coconut milk and honey into the blender - it freezes well and makes a great "ice cream" treat!
Naoko's "Coconut Banana" recipe:
"Coconut Banana": Put sugar into coconut milk and boil it. Put cut Banana into it. You can eat it as it is or cool it in the refrigerator and eat!" It's tasty!
Here is a cool report from Shonen Knife Fan, Naomi Fukumitsu, who lives in Brazil! She writes: "I love Shonen Knife! My dream is to see one concert of Shonen Knife... I'm very patient. I hope to see them someday. This tattoo I did in 1997! Kisses and Hugs! Naomi"
Very cute, Naomi! We hope you'll get your wish someday!

Shonen Knife are Naoko and Atsuko Yamano, with a great support drummer, Mana Nishiura. The mercurial Naoko Yamano continues on as the songwriter, lead singer and signature-styling lead guitarist for Shonen Knife. The stylish & creative Atsuko Yamano was long featured at the back of the stage behind her drum kit.. where she performed with such joyful enthusiam that she was noted as "the most joyful drummer in Rock". Now, Atsuko has moved to front stage, and is clearly displaying her long-time multi-instrumental abilities, as the Bass Player for Shonen Knife. Naoko describes Atsuko's bass styling... as "Funky"! New Drummer, Mana Nishiura, has played with notable rock bands in Japan including "Rashinban" (Boredoms guitarist Yamamoto-san's band) and "Droop" - a Goth Punk Girl Band, formerly on Sister/Benten Label in Tokyo, who recently disbanded. She is a great rock drummer and addition to the Shonen Knife sound & live show! Shonen Knife are now scheduling new Live Performances in Japan. The best available information is posted here!
Shonen Knife Live Reports! Updated from Japan
Check out the reviews for some of the Shonen Knife show in Japan - submitted by long-time "small circle of friends" member, Pretty Little Kappa-chan Mamiko Nakagawa, for all Shonen Knife Fans, on her Heartfriends of Shonen Knife website. Here is an earlier review, from July 22, 2001!
Kappa-chan Mamiko writes:
I went to Shonen Knife 712 Day Eve tonight.
I arrived at Club Quattro at 6:30 p.m. (start time was 7:00 p.m.)
Many fans were in line outside, so they had to go backstage soon. But my heart was beating!
Inside, there were many fans packed! They didn't forget Shonen Knife!
Then, at 9:00 p.m., the Shonen Knife show started! They were wearing navy pants and white short dress shirt - it looked very much like "panda tour" costumes! Naoko said to the crowd, "We decided July 12nd is "Shonen Knife Day" for this century ourselves. Tonight (July 11) is "712 day eve!"
The crowd was very friendly, happy and excited. They played songs new and old with lots of energy.
There was a big obstacle column at front-left of Club Quattro. With the packed crowd, I found myself standing out back of the column! I always thinking, "If only it were transparency!" So, I couldn't see Atsuko and Mana very well during the show, almost until they were playing Encore.
They played, and left the stage, the crowd began clapping and chanting "SHO-NEN KNIFE! SHO-NEN KNIFE!".
So they return, and I first saw Atsuko and Mana clearly when they were dancing to Karaoke of "Chinese Disco".
Mana is young and very cute. It maybe, she carry off many Shonen Knife fan's heart! ha ha.. Her height is not taller, it is the same as Naoko and Atsuko. My observant eye found some blood blister on Mana's left hand. She plays drums using her left hand in "marched grip" style. Almost all lady drummers are using "regular grip". I never saw "marched grip" girls drummer in Japan. So, I was awed by the Mana's drum technique and power. That's amazing!
(NOTE: PLKC Mamiko is a skilled drummer herself... and she notices these things! In "marched grip" style - a drummer holds the left drumstick with the palm upward, and the drumstick gripped between the thumb and forefinger - w/the drumstick resting between the middle & ring finger for balance and accents. This style is common to drummers who "march" with a slanted side drum in marching band.. and with many professional jazz drummers. Often, Rock Drummers play with both sticks gripped palms down, in a "fist" hold - or what Mamiko refers to as "regular grip".)
Shonen Knife gave me new energy! My favorite song this night was probably "Boys". Atsuko was playing the bass and singing a song so much more energetic than when she was drummer!
I have seen many Shonen Knife shows, and perhaps this was the not best show I've ever seen, but we can believe all expectations for new Shonen Knife! I deeply felt my longtime words, "Shonen Knife forever!"
Here is their set list:
1. Konnichiwa! (1st live song as Shonen Knife appear)
---Encore------
Before and after the concert I talked with them and took some pictures!
A little while after the show, I got backstage pass from Mr.Shibata! I went soon to the backstage (down floor). I met Atsuko. I said, "It's very good show! I didn't feel blank these few years of Shonen Knife (changes). I think you must practice hard!!"
Atsuko told me, "I am very glad for your words, because you know Shonen Knife very well from old times!"
I met Naoko. She said, "Thank you for always looking after us! I am very happy you keep up as our fan!" Naoko and Atsuko asked me to "George Ojisan, say hello".
I met Mana, also. I said to Mana, "How do you do? I'm Mamiko Nakagawa". Mana had to carry her drum set out by herself soon, so I couldn't talk but very shortly. I'd like to ask many questions of her. (This is my "homework"!)
I took two photos at backstage with Naoko, Atsuko, Mana and Me. Then, with Naoko, Atsuko, Mana and Marty Freedman (retired Megadeath guitarist). He is very handsome and little speaks Japanese!
I am very looking forward to future shows by New Shonen Knife!
Always friend,
(Special thanks to Pretty Little Kappa-chan Mamiko for this report on the "712 Day Eve" show, for the Shonen Knife NeXuS, and World Wide Fans!)
Here is a second review of the "712 Day Eve 2001" in Shibuya Quattro, Tokyo! This review was submitted to the NeXuS by Cutie Emi of the funtastic "Jelly Beans" Shonen Knife Fans Page in Japan! We are very happy to have her review!!
Cutie Emi writes:
The show itself was started from 7 pm and 2 bands played before Shonen
Knife.
At last here they come! It was 9:30 pm.
Their set list was this:
1:Synthesizer (Baburu Houkai - Opening Theme)
---Encore---
17:Chinese Disco (karaoke version, They (Yamano sisters with Mana) danced so cutely!
Atsuko played bass and Mana played drums for all songs!
I called "Shonen Knife freaks" to join the chat party by putting a notice on the Jelly Beans' top page at that night (in japanese).
Though the band "Girl Motor" has not made their debut yet, they are SK freaks and
covered "E.S.P." at Osaka's show (July 12).
I did not go to Osaka. I heard that the songs played was totally same as Tokyo's show. Also, Marty Friedman did not appear in Osaka. He was guest only for the Tokyo Show.
We were very satisfied with this show!!
(Special thanks to Cutie Emi for her fine review of the July 11 show in Tokyo!!)
Following are the original announcments of these shows, and the upcoming hot-hot show on September 25th, in Osaka!

Rhino Records released a new "Tribute to The Powerpuff Girls" CD, on July 18, 2000. The album features new songs by performers such as Devo, Frank Black, Shonen Knife, Apples in Stereo, Optiganally Yours, Komeda, Cornelius, The Sugarplastic, Dressy Bessy and Bis (who wrote & performed the show's end theme). In an interview with Naoko Yamano, April 2000 - she told us that she had written a "powerful song" for Shonen Knife's contribution to the album! The song is "Buttercup (I'm a Super Girl"), performed in true Shonen Knife style!
You can hear their new song online! Here are some links for Knife Fans to check out:
Rhino Records.
We have some of the song details, to get you in the mix!:
"GOKIBURU" means "pretend like cockroach... and cockroach says "gokiburi" in Japanese. "buru" is a verb. "gokiburi" and "buru"... so, "gokiburu"! Naoko made a new word!
Naoko recently completed a 3-hour detailed interview with a journalist from Tokyo, for the Japanese Rock Magazine, "Doll". Naoko says that the Shonen Knife Discography, will appear in the feature in the magazine. If you have a friend in Japan, perhaps they could watch for this edition to "hit the stands" there, and pick up a copy!
A special interview with Shonen Knife - Naoko & Atsuko Yamano was broadcast on Sunday, December 26th 1999 around 6:00 pm, Eastern Time - on
Superstation WFMU, New York! Naoko and Atsuko were interviewed by the host for the show, Tamar Rothenberg. They had travelled from Osaka to New York, for final mastering of the "Strawberry Sound" album! This interview was taped at the WFMU Studios in Jersey City, New York on Friday, December 17. WFMU is Quintessential Cool in Radio... and they were playing the new SK Christmas song, "All I Want For Christmas" and other SK Tracks!

Get with the summer 1999 Japanese 3" single CD (4 tracks) featuring Naoko Yamano! The title is "Yamucha Rou De Mecha Umakarou" (Tea) c/w "Hamigaki" (Brush Your Teeth!). Universal-Victor ~ MVDH-9017. Release date: 6/18/99. For all the details, visit Knife Cuts!
Naoko sang all the parts of the songs, even the "fake Chinese rap part". The B-Side song, "Hamigaki", is a cute song about dental hygeine.Naoko said,
"Hamigaki" means "Brush Your Teeth" ~ everybody needs to brush their teeth, right?!" She reports, "We can watch and listen to "Hamigaki" on a TV program called "Minna-no Uta" (Everyone's song) on NHK (Japanese National Television) in June and July. The program is (one) that NHK broadcasts their recommended songs to all Japanese nation(s). Shonen Knife's song was chosen as national recommendable song!"
In an informational email to the Shonen Knife NeXuS, Naoko also reported on another studio project she completed in 1999: "Recently, I remixed a song for a Japanese alternative rock band called Blood Thirsty Butchers! The title of the song is"Alligator", too. The title is the same (as the song Naoko wrote for Tomoe Shinohara) but they are different songs, though. Anyway, I used keyboards very much and I remixed the rock song (into) a 'horror song'. It was so fun!" ("Blood Thirsty Butchers" - album title: "We Love Butchers". Universal-Victor MVCH-29032).
At that time, it was determined that this was news that long-time fans of Shonen Knife should be told, and I posted a formal announcement for all Shonen Knife Fans on the Usenet Newsgroup, alt.music.shonen-knife - that Michie had retired from the band.
In her recent message to the Shonen Knife NeXuS Naoko acknowledged that the decision of Michie to retire - was not a sudden, dramatic event... it was carefully agreed upon by the band after a time. Naoko wrote of their decision, for the record: "Yes, Michie left Shonen Knife. "All of us spent enough time to talk about Michie's (leaving) and we made the decision. I hope she will be happy in her new life."
Shonen Knife have maintained one of the most dedicated fan bases in the world... because they remained true to their original vision and overcame many setbacks to become a great live rock band. The alchemy between Naoko, Michie and Atsuko on the live stage - created spontaneous combustion in crowds who saw them perform. Their records were sadly underpromoted in the U.S. in recent years - but they were acclaimed by those fortunate enough to have seen them in performance. As one midwest fan put it: "This is a big deal. I'm Generation X, and
We are encouraged that Michie is reported to be happy, and every Shonen Knife fan in contact as of this update has expressed interest and support for the continuing projects of Shonen Knife with Naoko Yamano and sister Atsuko Yamano (the most joyful drummer in rock) ~ as well as love, hope and anticipation for future musical works from the wonderful Michie Nakatani, who will surely "catch the groove" & "catch her bus!" in her new life!
"moment, moment!"
"When the Master was asked to distill the truth of Zen down into a nutshell... a simple phrase that would say it all, he laughed. Everyone laughed. Then, he replied,
Shonen Knife have contributed a track to a new "various artists" Tribute CD in Japan. Entitled Mighty Atom (or) "Iron Atom"), the song is long a pop favorite with fans of Japanese cartoon film animation. The album is called "Atom Kids: Tribute to the King "O.T.", dedicated to Japanese Comic Artist Legend, OSAMU TEZUKA, creator of Astroboy and other great Japanese cartoon favorites. More information on this release is featured in the Knife Cuts here on the NeXuS. Also, there is now a Remix album, with Naoko doing the remix on the song - featuring great slapback guitar-echo work! (WEA records Japan - WPC6-10008).
Shonen Knife have wrapped up the recording of new songs for a new album, for late 1999/early 2000. The band completed their 1998 N. American "Happy Hour" Tour on September 2 of that year, after trekking the West Coast & N.E. sections of the country, from August 13 in Los Angeles, to September 2 in Philadelphia. This was a very popular tour with Shonen Knife Fans, following the release of their great 1998 album, "Happy Hour" worldwide! For the listings on the September-December Asian Tour Info - see the Asian Tour Section! For all the information on the Aug/Sept U.S. Shonen Knife Tour Dates - see the U.S. Happy Hour Tour '98 Section here on the NeXuS
An official book featuring Shonen Knife Tour Diaries, Drawings, Legends and Photos from their earliest days as a band - through their 1997 Pacific and N. American Tour - was released in Japan in synch with the new "Happy Hour" Album - June 23, 1998. Long a favorite project of theirs - this book is like no other ever released by a band! Entitled "Shonen Knife Land" - it was printed by the Japanese Publishing firm, "Littlemore" books, in Japan (only, at this time). (ISBN4-947648-73-2). Sections were translated into English by Carl Freire (Japanese-English Translations), a musician and long-time associate of the band. The Knife Collectors Section here on SKLA, offers info on this major Shonen Knife collectable! "Knifeland" is beautifully done... though some parts are only in Japanese - concerning Shonen Knife's personal comments about their history. The photos and their drawings in full color are very fun and any Shonen Knife/Pop/Rock fan will love having this book! The Band brought some copies with them to the U.S. for the 1998 Tour - selling them along with new 1998 "Happy Hour" Tour T-Shirts!
In the initial report to the NeXuS from Mr. J. Page Porrazzo, of Fuji Pacific Publishing, the recording by Shonen Knife was licensed by Fuji Pacific for use in the film, at the film company's request, after a viewing of advance copies of the film determined the storyline was "reflective" and "well crafted". It has some humorous moments, certainly. The film was previewed in a coveted Friday night Showcase at the last Sundance Film Festival. The recording by Shonen Knife plays for about 2'55" in a montage scene featuring the principle actors in a screen segment, reflecting each of them coming to a "defining moment" in their lives.
Writing talents such as Burt Bacharach, Richard Carpenter and Hal David have also approved songs for use in this new film. For Shonen Knife, this is the third major film that has featured their recording of "Top of the World" in a soundtrack. The song previously appears in the soundtracks/cd's for the dark film comedy, The Last Supper", and a featured scene in the 1998 Disney Classic Film release, "The Parent Trap"! Their recording was originally done for inclusion in the wonderful Carpenters' Tribute Album released on A&M Records in 1994, "If I Were A Carpenter". Shonen Knife's recording of the "Top of the World" was also featured in a Microsoft TV Commercial, in that companies' campaign ("Where do you want to go, today?") surrounding the release of Microsoft Internet Explorer, in the mid-90s. This is a brilliant, sparkling recording by Shonen Knife, and it's appeal is proving to be timeless.
A Shonen Knife recording was featured in a major Disney Motion Picture! The 1998 remake of The Parent Trap! Their recording of Top of the World is used to kick off the action in the film, and is included on the Parent Trap" Soundtrack album CD (Hollywood Records HR-62167-2)- available in the Soundtrack/Shows section of record stores. This film played in theatres everywhere - as Shonen Knife were touring American cities on their"Happy Hour" Tour, and was released on video in December 1998! The Band previously had great success with this cover version of the Carpenter's "Top of the World" when it was featured in a 1995 Microsoft TV Commercial, and also in the film soundtrack for "The Last Supper".
August 21st: A Shonen Knife song from their album "Let's Knife" (Virgin V2-86638)- (english-language version) "Ah, Singapore!" was licensed for use in the action film, "Blade". (There is no listing for "Ah, Singapore" on the music soundtrack CD at the official "Blade" Site, but the song *is* in the film!) Based on a Marvel Comics Super-hero character, "Blade, the Vampire Hunter" - the film stars Wesley Snipes in the title role, as "Blade". His sidekick is played in the film by Kris Kristofferson. From Tri-Star Pictures (Juno Films) this is a guaranteed action adventure hit, certainly with Hong Kong action-film scenesters, and the marketing campaign for "Blade" Action Movie Gear is Full-Tilt! In the music world - the Original Pop Metal "Blade",Shonen Knife, toured in Hong Kong and Singapore, in October 1998 - with cool Taiwanese all-girl band, "Ladybug" opening, and other young asian bands, too! Shonen Knife do not actually appear in the film (as heavily rumored) but the Shonen Knife song, "Ah, Singapore" is used on a "radio in the background" during a "confrontational" scene in a kitchen, (immediately following the scene where "Blade" walks through the Disco. Hey, let's get cooking! - Note: The girls on stage "rapping" in that disco scene - are not Shonen Knife, but are said to be a duo called "Bang Wa Cherry". (Not credited anywhere in the film listings...) That particular song, was reportedly called "Oh Yeah". Shonen Knife's mini-CD release in Japan, "Wonderwine" - featured tunes written for a Japanese film, "I Hate Studying". (i.e.) Compatibility for Shonen Knife music in movies, seems to be a trend. Imagery in their songs is vibrant, and synchs wonderfully with dramatic scenarios!
The Japanese Shonen Knife single, "Banana Chips" - is used as the ending theme song for a Saturday Morning Cartoon Show in Japan! The song was slated to be used on the show for a year. The name of the show is "Mii Fa Puu", it is beautifully animated and best information is that the title refers to the first syllable of the names of the three cartoons that make up the show.
For the compiled information on previous Shonen Knife tour dates in Japan, appearances, album releases, Internet broadcasts and more through July 1998 - see the Shonen Knife Wonder Tour '98 Section and the Main Page for links.
Shonen Knife completed their 1998 "Wonder Tour" of Japan, with a series of Live Shows and In-store appearances in major cities, an appearance on Osaka Television and on the Tokyo-based "Factory" TV Show! They performed Live concert dates leading up to a big final performance at the 1998 Fuji Rock Festival on August 1, 1998. Here is the listing for the "In-store appearances" and showcases: (for a complete listing - see the Wonder Tour Calendar '98 Section).
Oh, what a wonderful time I had!
The new Shonen Knife show was at Club Quattro in Tokyo on the (7/11) Evening before
"712 Day". 712 means July 12th. It also has a Japanese reading: "knife"
- as "na-i-fu". In Japanese, "Nana"=7, "Ichi"=1, "Futatsu"=2. So, Na(7) + I(1) + Fu(2)= "Naifu", which is "Knife"!
Many people were checking in here for tickets and there was excited confusion!
I turned to look and saw Shonen Knife Manager Mr. Shibata... with Naoko and Atsuko here! Naoko and Atsuko soon said, "Oh, Mamiko! We haven't seen you for a long time!" Their words made me happy. I told them, "I'd like to talk to you after the show, is it O.K.?" Atsuko said, "Of course! We are waiting for you!"
The opening bands were MO'SOME TONEBENDER and Bloodthirsty Butchers. They each played a 1 hour show.
Do you know Marty Freedman (Megadeath's guitarist)? I didn't know him, but he played the guitar for "Twist Barbie" with Naoko as "special guest."

Shonen Knife Debut "Happy Hour" - Live on the Internet!!
Shonen Knife gave a Live Performance in the Microsoft Studios in Redmond, Washington USA on June 23rd, 1998 - beginning at 6:00 p.m. (Pacific Time). The event was timed to be the first-ever debut of a new album by a Band via the Internet, and as a "kick-off" party for the Windows '98 debut to follow on June 25th. The show went well, and Big Deal Records in New York (who release Shonen Knife's recordings in the U.S. and Canada...) announced that more than 1800 people logged in, tuned out the Planetary Spin Cycle for about an hour and a half, and turned on to "Happy Hour" for this worldwide Netcast with Shonen Knife!! The video/audio stream was via Microsoft's "NetShow" program. Links to the show were provided by Sonic Net and Big Deal Records in New York. The Shonen Knife NeXuS provided links for Shonen Knife Fans on the "NeXuS Frequency" to go directly to one of the two Access sites provided.
There was much excitement among Shonen Knife Fans over the release of the album, and the NetCast certainly added to that feeling. People who were able to access the event via computer - were enthusiastic in their comments on the band, their performance, the new album and the Microsoft NetCast. "Wow! What a great show!!" was the repeated theme of most of the EMail to The NeXuS from those who saw it. "Happy Hour" is a cohesive, tuneful, rockin' album of guitar-edge pop masterpieces - as only Shonen Knife could write or perform them. This is their most consistent, powerful album yet - in (15) years of Shonen Knife music on record. "Happy Hour" is like eating Cracker Jacks - the more you eat... the more you want!! Please check the Knife Cuts Section here on the Shonen Knife NeXuS - for details, song listings, etc. for "Happy Hour"!
Few bands have such truly dedicated fans in these times. Some Shonen Knife fans made their own flyers, handbills, and contacts - hitting the street to promote the band and the new album, "Happy Hour!" Many reprinted the SKNN#1 and distributed it widely in their cities - while others designed their own flyers, and had great success in getting them into record stores, etc. This was yet another "unprecedented" event, surrounding the legend that Shonen Knife have already created for themselves - as a cutting-edge Supergroup. Very special thanks to Dean Mentjes, and Andy Blinn - for their concentrated efforts in taking time from their professional lives to promote Shonen Knife and the new "Happy Hour" album, both on the Net and in other cities.

A report from our friend Michihiro Ueno in Japan in October '97 stated that Shonen Knife were scheduled for an appearance at the Hanabun Farewell Festival" in Osaka, Japan on October 26, 1997 - at 6:00 p.m.. The show featured Shonen Knife, Agata Morio, Nakajima Ramo and the Japan Nokogiri Association, Kansai Chapter, among others. Late word from PLKC Mamiko Nakagawa came, that Shonen Knife Guitarist/Singer Naoko Yamano was unable to appear, due to an announced illness - and the guitar work was done by Atsushi Shibata, who had previously filled in for Bassist Michie Nakatani during the early stops on their 1997 Australian Tour - when Michie was unable to perform for a brief time. The Band appeared under the name Panda Club, folk band style. Also, Panda Club performed at the Osaka Industrial University Festival the following week on November 2, 1997.
Here is a Japanese press release from the Addicted to Noise Tokyo correspondent for the festival, Brian Kushnir - as it was released in Japan:
Chili Peppers had performed just 45 minutes when power was cut to their amps. Addicted to Noise Tokyo correspondent Brian Kushnir reports :
Typhoon Rosie struck the mammoth Fuji Rock Festival '97 Saturday causing
the final act of the day the Red Hot Chili Peppers to abort their performance
after 45 minutes.
The second day of the festival was canceled Sunday morning because of
extensive damage to the site by Typhoon Rosie which hit Japan Saturday
afternoon blasting parts of the country with torrential rains and winds
as high as 89 mph. (The severity of the typhoon was such that it nearly
paralyzed air land and sea transportation throughout Japan with 100s of
domestic flights canceled and many train and ferry services suspended
according to wire service reports.)
The festival held in a ski area at the base of Mt. Fuji was billed as the largest
outdoor rock music festival ever held in Japan. The festival's promoter Smash
said early Sunday that "...because of serious damage to the festival site caused
by the typhoon yesterday, it is impossible to make the site safe and secure for
both artists and audience."
Among the eclectic mix of artists that were scheduled to appear on the
second day were Prodigy, Green Day, Beck, Massive Attack, Mad Professor,
The Seahorses, Lee "Scratch" Perry and Weezer.
A steady rain fell throughout the day on Saturday turning the Fuji
Tenjinyama Ski Area into a sea of 4-inch deep mud.
Full body rain ponchos were a must and many of the estimated 20,000 people
in attendance were also carrying umbrellas.
In addition to the headlining Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Saturday line-up
included Rage Against The Machine, Foo Fighters, Southern Culture On the
Skids, Third Eye Blind, and The Yellow Monkey - one of Japan's most popular bands.
By mid-afternoon the area around the main stage which was located at the
base of a ski run became a human mud slide.
Due to a steep incline(audience members were packed onto the ski run)
many people simply could not help but slide down into those in front of them.
Things took a serious turn for the worse during the Chili Peppers' set.
(singer Anthony Kiedis performed with a cast on his right wrist and a sling).
The band had to plead with audience members to assist each other in insuring
that people were not crushed against the barrier in front of the stage.
The fierce winds sent rain pounding onto the stage, soaking the entire band.
Although both audience and band seemed to be enjoying the show despite
the storm - behind the scenes staff were struggling to hold the metal pieces
of the stage (as well as various parts of Chili Pepper drummer Chad Smith's
drum-set) together with their bare hands.
Staff members pleaded with band members to cut the show short.
Power was cut to the band members on-stage amplifiers and the massive
light rig was operating at about 10% capacity. Reluctantly, the band agreed to
finish things up, aborting their impressive and well-received set after
only 45 minutes with their hit, "Give It Away."
Strong winds and rain continued through the night and the cancellation of the second day was announced early Sunday morning.
(end of report) Special thanks to Kappa-chan Mamiko Nakagawa - for this excellent report from Japan.

Typhoon Rosie was not on the list - but crashed the gate, anyway. There were many thousands of fans there for this first big rock festival in Japan - and it was very sad that it could not realize it's full, wonderful magic. The photos from the site on the Festival Homepage are very up-to-date, with full coverage of the devastation of the Typhoon to the area. I'm sure everyone will make up for it, next year!
There are variations in the packaging of this CD that would be of interest to serious Knife Collectors - read the details in the Knife Cuts Section here. - Shonen Knife performed on March 30, 1997 (Easter Sunday) at a terrific show at the newly-restored Osaka Castle, in their hometown of Osaka, Japan! Many Shonen Knife Fans were there, and word here at SKLA is that Honorable members of the Yamano Family were present for the Show, as well! Shonen Knife Fan, and Moderator of the SK "Explosion!" Home Page in Japan, Ken Furuto - has posted a very good review of this show on his site, and you can read all about it by clicking *HERE*! Many thanks, Ken!
Additionally, Mr. Iwao (E-wow) Sakakibara sent an EMail message to moderators of Shonen Knife Home Pages on the Net - with his impressions of this wonderful Easter Sunday show in Osaka! Here is the body of his EMail, as he reported his experience at the Osaka Castle performance on March 30th:
I went to Osaka on 3/30 for SK free live. I met Mr. Furuto on the spot
(Thank you, Furuto-san!).
This free live was held at Osaka Castle under the auspices of Osaka radio
station called FM802. So this live was on the air only Osaka (Kansai Area).
The opening acts were bubble gum rock band named "Curio" from Osaka, and
Scottish punk pop techno band named "bis" (I just bought their album "the
new transister heroes").
Circumstance of live was written in detail by Mr. Furuto (Live in the OSAKA
Castle!), so I omit.
I regret to say that they didn't play new songs, "It's A New Find" or
"Mysterious Drug Store". I just wanted to listen to them. ;(
But I'm so happy, because I could listen to "My Favorite Town" (Osaka)! They will
never play this song at Tokyo, Nagoya, Hong-Kong or London.
Have a nice weekend!
Iwao Sakakibara! "E-wow"
Los Angeles - February 8th, 1997: The Shonen Knife performance at the famous "Troubadour" club in West L.A. was another in a series of legendary shows by the band in Los Angeles over the years. Shonen Knife gave an outstanding show, and it will certainly be remembered by the SRO crowd who was there. (Shonen Knife appearances in the City of Angels have always been "the stuff of Legend" - and this one was exceptional - and they were preceded on stage by (5) great bands! The Ladies came to rock the joint - and that is what they did. They gave keen-edged renditions of old favorites, and many of the new tracks from the forthcoming U.S. Release of their latest album, "Brand New Knife". The new album is now released in the U.S. - on March 18, 1997 - on "Big Deal" Records. (Big Deal 9035).
The girls came on stage after strong sets from (5) other bands! Splitsville opened the show with a heavy trio performance of tunes from their album "Splitsville, U.S.A.", and were followed by a tight set from Frosted featuring Jane Wiedlin (many fans in the crowd!). This was followed by a smashing good peformance by local band Cockeyed Ghost from Reseda, California - with songs from their new album "Keep Yourself Amused" - (excellent grunged version of "Good Vibrations" ended their set). Then, a great set of Power-Pop tunes by The Wondermints from their new self-titled release! Special added surprise group Redd Kross contributed a hard-driving set of songs from their new album "Show World" - and it was a brilliant stroke - (but, obviously, "BAM" didn't get it!) because they are long-time fans and friends of Shonen Knife, and their special appearance in honor of the girls first L.A. show since December 1995 made this not just a "Pop Fest" - but something more like a "musical Love-Fest"! (Long-time L.A. "Poptopian's" will remember that L.A. in the "Pop 60s" was noted for a number of "Love-Ins" - where bands showed up to play in the parks, and people came to "groove".) The best music happens when people celebrate together, and at the reasonable price these tickets went for - this outstanding talent lineup was one of the best bargains of the year! It was all a great intro for "Our Favorite Band From Osaka"!
At almost exactly midnight - Shonen Knife took the stage and made it their own! Naoko, Michie and Atsuko looked marvelous in the new *pink sparkle* outfits created by SK Drummer (and Fashion Designer) Atsuko Yamano - who has designed and sewn their smashing trademark stage apparel over the years. (At first, I had the new outfits down as *gold* but a consensus of those at the show said *silver*! I now know, from a TRS ("totally reliable source") that they are, in fact: *pink*!) The new outfits accented their stage presence very well, reflecting the hues of the lights. Michie wore a beautiful *pink and black* pants suit of the new design. Atsuko was very sharp in her *pink* blouse and skirt. Naoko appeared in a *pink* skirt with a beautiful *white* silk blouse which featured flowing sleeves that added a great sense of motion to her stage moves. Fans in Australia have commented previously (see the Australian Tour section here on SKLA) as to "how sharp they looked" on stage. They were clearly enjoying themselves, spoke easily with the crowd about the songs - and proceeded straight-away to deliver them in memorable "cutting-edge" Shonen Knife performance! There was a brief problem with a faulty guitar cord on Michie's Bass Guitar early in the set, but that was quickly repaired by a Technician - they never missed a beat. Anyone who has seen Shonen Knife LIVE, will recall that Atsuko is a study in joyful bliss when she is singing and performing on the drums. She was certainly radiant during *this* show! Michie appeared well recovered from a brief ailment just prior to the Australian Tour - and she performed in *perfect synch* with Naoko when the two of them took to center-stage for some high-powered head-banging! Michie was happy, bouyant and bouncing, and Naoko was pouncing ferociously all about the stage - and almost out in the crowd!
Here is the Set List from the Show:
1. Riding on the Rocket - (from Osaka to New Zealand to Australia to Osaka to L.A. to New York - and home!)
12. Brown Mushrooms - (that great Shonen Knife tasty harmony and melody - and very well done Live!)
This was the only performance scheduled for the band on this U.S. visit. It's on record as yet another "Live for sell-out crowd" appearance by Shonen Knife! From the energy released at this show - it was easy to see (and great to know) that Shonen Knife are back... and in Top Form! They certainly proved it in the 1997 Tour of North America in April/May 1997, following the Poptopia appearance!
2. Flying Jelly Attack! - (the "ritual" lives! Jelly beans were (quite carefully) tossed onto the stage during the song!)
3. Loop di Loop - (new song from "Brand New Knife"! It was inspired by the rides at the Magic Mountain Theme Park, just north of Los Angeles! This is the first song that they all collaborated on, and wrote together!)
4. Twist Barbie - (still Pristine Pop Punk Perfection!!)
5. Devil House - (the crowd called for it, and they delivered! Very cool, mysterious 'vibrato' guitar from Naoko on this tune!)
6. Fruits and Vegetables - (Atsuko sang this new song (written by Michie) - in her usual state of "full bliss!)
7. Top of the World - (crowds LOVE the way they do this song! Bill Gates must like it, too - because it was featured in a Microsoft Commercial last year! A great Shonen Knife arrangement of the Carpenters hit!
8. E.S.P. - (the hot first new single release from "Brand New Knife" - watch the TV in March to catch the new video!!)
9. Frogphobia - (Michie really drives her point home in her LIVE performance of this quite personal song! - She does this song great!)
10. Tomato Head - (Naoko sings it, and the power guitar lines translate as heady, heavy and tasty!)
11. Buddha's Face - (the most mysterious song on "Brand New Knife"! A very heavy-metal treatment. You can solve the "Mystery" of "Buddha's Face"... in Part Two of the SKLA Shonen KnifeOnline Interview - see the link on the main page!)
The Encore songs:
13. Antonio Baka Guy - (rock solid performance of one of the great super-jam Shonen Knife speed metal songs, to close this show!)
