Farewell, Shonen Knife! Thank you for the Happy Hours!
Shonen Knife have completed their 1998 "Happy Hour" Tour in the U.S. & Canada, which was launched in L.A. on August 13th, hot on the heels of their Japanese Wonder Tour '98", their August 1 performance at the 1998 Fuji Rock Festival and release of their new album,
Happy Hour! They started up the West Coast, playing Headlining Tour Dates with Big Deal Label Artist Michael Shelley as the opening act - from August 13 thru August 19, and were joining in (playing their own show, as opening act) on some of the "Suffragette Sessions" Tour Dates along the East Coast from August 20th through September 2nd.
No "Headliners" were billed for the "Suffragette" Tour - the tour was patterned on the great Bob Dylan/Baez/McGuinn"Rolling Thunder Review" Tour of the 70's. However, with Shonen Knife opening some of the venues, for a lineup of talent which includes jams by Indigo Girls (Amy Ray and Emily Saliers) along with other great "Women Who Rock!": Jane Siberry , violinist Lisa Germano, Kate Schellenbach (of Luscious Jackson), Josephine Wiggs (the Breeders), Lourdes Perez & Thalia Zedek (Come), Jean Smith (Mecca Normal) and Gail Ann Dorsey - this was a well-attended road show.
Also touring the USA, Japan's "Buffalo Daughter" (who have performed with Shonen Knife in Japan & contributed their personal REMIX of the SK song, "Buddha's Face", to the Shonen Knife "Ultramix" CD (Japan) - were added to open for the Suffragettes Lineup, on dates when Shonen Knife did not open (due to headlining dates on their own tour schedule)! "A Tale of Three Tours" intertwined - in an interesting experiment. The idea seems to be, put a bunch of talented people on a Tour Bus, have them play at clubs along the way in different incarnations - and see what happens. Shonen Knife will join Joey Ramone & his (other) band, "The Independents" for (2) songs during their set at the Troubadour around 9 p.m. Tickets are listed as for the "VooDoo Glow Skulls" (headliners this evening). Tickets: $12.50. Opening band is "Welt". This is a *rare* opportunity to hear Shonen Knife in a set with one of their inspirations - Joey Ramone. Joey came on to join "Evil Presley" & the Independents, and midset - Shonen Knife joined them, & jammed on "I wanna be sedated", and "Blitzkrieg Bop"! Naoko playing guitar, with Michie & Atsuko singing together, pumping up the crowd. They looked like little Rainbows in a sky of Black Leather Musicians! The Mosh Pit EXPLODED!! The Troubadour commented afterward, that it was "the most active mosh pit action - ever seen at the Troubadour". Joey introduced Shonen Knife as "The Osaka Ramones"!
